Philippe Paraskevas
Book Review by Ralph J. Suarez [A Love Song for the Egyptian Arabian Horse]

When I was in my teens, I purchased The Classic Arabian Horse by Judi Forbis and proceeded to learn about the Egyptian Arabian Horse. It was and still is a significant starting point, in what is an amazing journey and after reading Phillipe Paraskevas's new book, I wish that this was the book that I had read back then instead. I would have learned more, with a greater depth of understanding. The book is a significant publication, words cannot accurately define the extraordinary book that it is. Provocative at times in thought, the author generously shares much insight into the individual horses and strains which make up the EAO breeding program. In a very clear format, the book is divided into three parts: how to read a pedigree vertically, the mare families/strains of the EAO and the sire lines of the EAO. It is not possible to fully comprehend all that the author presents in one reading and this is why I compare this book with Judi Forbis' book, as it is a major work of reference; a book that the reader will turn to, time after time for guidance, for advice, for encouragement, for inspiration. Quite simply, it is timeless, as relevant to the horse of today, as it will be for the horse of tomorrow. While I recognize that the author's opinion makes up much of the book, it is his respect and deep reverence for many of the horses (and particularly Anter) that won me over. If I had to pick only one chapter as my favorite, it would be Chapter 7, the Kuhaylan Rodan strain. This chapter reads as a love song to me, paying tribute to a strain which is so often misunderstood and founded on the courage, strength and endurance of a brave mare named Rodania, so long ago. You will read the words of this chapter with a lump in your throat, a tear in your eye and increasing warmth in your heart. My sincere congratulations for writing an outstanding book.
